Body - Object - Intersections
Body - Object - Intersections
As part of my artistic research, Body – Object – Intersections, I deal with the relations and interactions between body and object in a selection of my artworks. All of the works included combine the body plus an object in a performative moment; however, as the objects are specifically fitted to the artist’s body, they can only be fully sensed by the artist herself. The works here are described and categorized according to my BOIS Method, the Body – Object – Intersection Scan. Here, how the works were performed, how it felt to be in touch with the object, and what was learned in these practice-based projects are described. These discoveries are further transformed into new works, what I call Sensual Instruments and Performative Processes. The Sensual Instruments are usable, sculptural works that result from the research. For example, Little Friend, a hybrid including the gymnastics aid, a vaulting buck, is used for trying out backbends; and A – a mix between a movable seesaw and a metronome – can be used to feel how one’s interaction with it can impact a more complex system. The Performative Processes are exemplary workshop sessions – the Phantom Lab and the Body-Object-Intersection Labs – that have developed in line with the question of how it feels to be in touch with the works. These instruments and processes aim to spark curiosity and to invite anyone who is interested to feel these sensory experiences for themselves.

Workshops
In addition to her artistic works, Barbis Ruder regularly invites people to exchange ideas and experiment together.
With the workshop format : Body-Object-intersections she opens her research process to the audience and thus expands the artistic space for encounters and touch points.
Together with Antoinette Rhomberg, she offers specific artistic workshops Beyond Performance bringing together art students with administrative staff of the University.
Pop-Meditation is a fun and easy going dance session with a beautiful soundtrack and lots of space to center the body in a judgement-free environment.
Based on Barbis Ruder’s work with sculptural instruments, this workshop is a playround to get in touch and understand the space in between body and object.
How do they influence each other - which movements can be enabled, and how can the body be expanded or limited.
It is an application of Performative Processes in the context of a workshop. The bodies and artistic objects are brought into movement and finally into contact.
Come and play!
In the Beyond Performance format, art students meet administrative staff.
Within the framework of workshop units, they explore the question: what can we learn with and from each other, how can we get into contact and learn to understand each other?
The students are asked to use performative role-play formats to encourage staff to work and act performatively. Art students learn to communicate their own work.
Employees can immerse themselves live in the work, try it out and develop a new ease and understanding of artistic work, as well as communicate the relevance of their own work.
This exchange leads to a transfer of knowledge and artistic development ideas that go beyond the purely performative or have the performative element at their core.
Exercises in courage, confidence, trust and playful openness emerge.
Time required per department (staff) approx. 2-3 hours.
Developed and offered together with Antoinette Rhomberg.
Centering yourself can be fun and playful.
Pop meditation moves from extatic shaking and dancing into a calm sphere and meditation.
A playful and fun practice to end or start a day.
